Chit Chat at Lunch

So Carolyn came down over this past weekend and we got to have lunch togeather inbetween me going to work and her visiting her parents. She is pretty close to her parents, she likes to talk to her mom about a lot of things but boys sometimes she hides a but more. We went to a restaurant in cape may where she used to go with her summer friends. She said they used to go there to eat a lot when they each had an hour break for dinner during their busy summer working days. We talked about a lot during lunch. In the middle of talking her phone was beeping like crazy getting a lot of new text messages from friends and also she said she was getting poked. There is something on facebook where you can"poke" a friend like saying hey just by presing poke and she gets them sent to her phone. Everytime she gets poked on facebook she gets it sent to her cell phone. I asked what it cost when she got these texts and she ssaid he didnt know because her parents pay for it. She told me about her schedule. She has class from 12-3 Monday and Friday 9:30-4 Tuesday and Wed and 9:30 to 1230 on thursday. She gets dinnder in the cafeteria every night with her friends and then goes and does homework. She didnt start drinking until college but she only drinks once or twice every other week. When she does stay up at school on the weekends, her and her friends go clubbing in Providence one night and the next night go to the movies or rent movies and just hang out in the dorms. She is a pretty typical teenager and college student. She likes to party and have fun and she also is pretty responsible. She is focusing a lot on her school work and not so much partying like a lot of her friends are.

Vin's Space

Vin write me back about his bedroom at home and i am meeting him tomorrow after class at his dorm. He was there over the weekend and will be there tomorrow.

As for his room at his parents house, he wrote in an email on facebook to me. He communicates with me a lot through facebook and he speaks to a lot of his friends on facebook. He describes his room as being very plain. He has 3 posters hung up "naked women, guns and roses, and a led zepplin one". He has 2 guitars on the floor along with a tiny amplifier. He has an eagles locker and next to it there is a plain white desk with a computer on it which was built for gaming. He has a Tv a XBOX 360 and as he describes a really nice stereo system. as he explained more things that were around his room he said "dont think im queer" and he told me he has mickey mouse figurines on one shelf and swords and daggers on another. i wrote a short message back to him and i told him i did not think he was gay. He sent me a message back and told me the mickey mouse figurines were from when he was younger and he still likes the swords and daggers. Next he has a dresser with a black mirror on it because he likes to look at himself. i thought it was funny how he said he liked to look at himself. His bed is a queen because he likes a lot of room when he sleeps. In his closets, his clothes are neatly hung up but at the bottom of his closer is a bunch of junk that he hasnt seen in years.

This was his room to him and as he explained it to me i could almost just picture it in my head because he says it is plain and he gave me a lot of detail on colors and just to make me feel as though i was there.

Busy Schedule

I spoke with my male informant Vin who was supposed to meet me so i could see his dorm room. When i spoke to him on the phone he informed me that he was at home in Brigantine with a bad head cold. Instead of meeting him on thursday i am going to meet him on tuesday after class. Instead i spoke to him on the phone about his week. He told me that the weekend before he went to a frat party and was the Designated Driver because he is pledging to the fraternity. He told me that they played some "pong" meaning beer pong and they "bullshitted". He is very excited because he is meeting new people in the school and making more friends.
He also was telling me of his old girlfriend in high school and how seeing the couples togeather at the party was upseting him. That was the last relationship he was in and they were togeather for a year and they broke up over this past summer. I also asked him to take some pictures of his room at his parents house and to explain to me what is important to him while he is there. he told me he was bored at home so i gave him an assignment. I asked him to write about his room and tell me what he would show me and why. i thought that this would give him something to do and in case i couldnt ever make it out to Brigantine to see his parents house then this would cover what He thought about his room.

AOL IM's Talk about Highschool

My female informant is Carolyn, she is 18 years old and goes to the University of Rhode Island. I spoke with Carolyn on aol instant messenger for a bit today because i had some trouble getting in contact with her to meet up. She has been coming to my town every weekend and i usually meet up with her when she is down. Lately she has been wanting to spend her weekends at school because she is beginning to make more friends. I wanted to talk to her on the phone but she said that she wanted to talk over instant messenger because her roommate was in the room with her and her roommate was trying to do her homework. Carolyn told me of the boy she was "hooking up" with. She says his name is Dan and she likes him because he is super cute and a really nice guy but yet she has only known him for about a week. i thought it was funny that she knew he was a super nice guy but yet she has only known him a short amount of time. I asked her what high school was like for her because she told me how when she first got to school she was having a hard time meeting people. Carolyn went to an all girls high school. she told me that her freshman and sophomore years were the worst for her because she didn't fit in with any of the "groups" at school. She was in the choir in her school and that was mostly what she was into her first couple of years. She stayed home on week nights and did her homework and on weekends she would go to the shore with her parents. Her second year in high school was a little bit better than the first year. She joined in the musical and the school play where she became friends with more girls. She was very involved with the school play and musicals. When they practiced for the musical they went to a different school that had a stage which her school did not. It was a boys military school which was not far from where she lived. It was at this school in the afternoons practicing for the play, where she started to become; as she would say, "boy crazy." She liked the change from the all girls school and she liked to talk to the boys. She began to like one of the boys at the school and that is when she had her first kiss with a boy named Mitch. She was 15 years old. The boy that she believed she first loved was a boy named Rob. In her Junior year of high school she was still involved with the play very much and she told me that every night before and after practice, her and rob would "fool around" i wasn't really sure what she meant so i asked her what "fool around" meant and she told me that they would make out and he would try to feel her boobs. This was the first boy to try anything like that and she told me she didn't know what to do so she just let him do it. They went out for three months and he was the guy that she first had sex with. he was also the guy she took to her senior prom. She hung out at the military school a lot and her parents most of the time didn't know she was there. They didn't like her hanging around all of these military boys. Carolyn's senior year of high school, they did not do a play or musical like every other year so instead she played softball. she still went to the military school and hung around all the boys and went there to think and be away from her parents. she said that was her place to go and relax and hang out with friends. i thought it was interesting because she said when she started to get older and was a senior in high school, her parents would still go to the shore on the weekends and leave her at home. she told me that she went to the military school every weekend they were gone and hung out with her friends and rob while she was dating him. She was very excited to tell me about high school for her because she says that she is a completely different person from when she was in high school and i want to see how she views herself now as compared to then. i almost could not get anything into the conversation. It was mostly her typing and me reading. Every time i would attempt to write something it would disappear off of my screen because she would have said something already.

I met once before with my boy informant we have different schedules so its been tough. I am meeting him at school today so i can see his dorm room and when he goes home this weekend, he is going to take some pictures of his parents house and his room in the house. My girl informant has been a bit tough to get togeather with because now as she is meeting more people at college, she doesnt wanna leave on the weekends as much as she used to. I am adding another informant who is another girl. She lives closer and i would like to have all three informants in my project. She is a gay female and i think it would be interesting to hear the differences in lives or how she told her parents and that kind of thing. I am going to meet with informant three on saturday for a movie then we are going to meet up with her girlfriend and get something to eat. im a bit confused on where we are supposed to be in the project such as how far along we are supposed to be. and what exactly we should be working on. i know that we are writing the spaces paper soon and thats due in a few classes but what else should we be working on for the class other than the readings?

I did not get to meet with my boy informant yet. I didnt get his consent form signed because he was at stockton all weekend and i worked. When i did have off i met up with my female informant and talked to her a little bit about high school. We talked about what kind of things she liked to do on weekends and weekdays. I forgot the consent form at my house so i will have to have her sign it next time we meet. I also talked to her about the myspace project and she thought it was a great idea.

I have contacted both of my informants and spoke to them both about participating in this with me and about what i am going to use in class. One is an 18 year old boy who attends stockton and is a Freshman. My other informant is a Freshman at a college in Rhode Island. I have spoke with them online a few times and i should be meeting with the boy on tuesday and with the girl next weekend when she comes down to my hometown and her weekend getaway. The only thing i am really nervous about is finding all this time to spend with them because she is here on wekeends i can only meet with her for an hour on the weekends or sometimes 2 hours and the boy is joining a fraternity so his time is also limited i am going to be able to meet with them once a week but also i can talk to them on the internet and over myspace and facebook.
